Beginning in Fall 2022 and continuing through June 2024, Walk ‘n Rollers will be engaging with up to 10 schools in the Oxnard School Districts to develop enthusiasm for more walking and biking to school.

We will be working with the target schools to improve eduction and enhance encouragement around active transportation. Schools will select from a list of activities and work to tailor them to the needs of their schools. The list includes pedestrian and bicycle safety workshops and community engagement activities.

Other elements of the program include walk audits and infrastructure developments.

2024 Art Contest

DEADLINE: September 27

APPLICATION ENGLISH
APLICACION SPANISH

As part of the city-wide Safe Routes to School program, the Why Drive Art Contest is back! This is a great way to engage students of all levels about the benefits of active transportation.

Imagine if you didn’t take a bus or a car to school. How would you get there?

There are many ways to get to school, but driving door-to-door is still the primary mode of transport for most Oxnard students. Driving to school everyday adds to traffic and pollution around our schools, and can create an unsafe environment for our students. We think there are better ways to get to school and we would like to hear from our Oxnard students!

Win a new bike helmet, bike lock or bike lights!

To enter, students can create an original artwork based on the theme “Why drive when you can…” and submit them at City Hall on or before September 27, 2024, along with the attached application. Winners will be selected and displayed at the Oxnard Main Library beginning October 4, 2024. Grade level prizes will also be awarded!

INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY – OCTOBER 9, 2024

Strap on your helmet and lace up your shoes. International Walk to School Day is October 9, 2024!

International Walk to School Day invites schools in and around the City of Oxnard to celebrate the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit. Whether addressing the need to make routes to school safer for active trips or encouraging children and teens to be more active, the international Walk to School Day is a powerful tool to inspire lasting change. Of course, they are also fun!

By encouraging your families to walk or roll to school on October 9 or parking a few blocks away and walking the rest, you will be helping to send a message of creating safer streets and healthier communities. We encourage you to use the attached flier and social media graphic to promote the day.

If you are interested in taking this to another level and hosting a Walk to School Day event, we have tools posted here for your use, including a 5 step planner and 10 Reasons to Walk or Bike to School.
